Equipment
The Switchover Help Scheme has worked with manufacturers to make sure
Help Scheme standard option equipment is easy to use. For example:
- Our standard option set top box has been specially designed so you can use almost every feature of your TV at the touch of one button.
- The remote control is well designed with large coloured buttons.
- We pair your remote control to the TV so you only need one remote control.
- Turn on audio description and subtitles with one button.
- The onscreen TV guide is easy to read and easy to use.
- There’s a button on the Help Scheme remote control which will bring you back to BBC One at any time if you get lost.
- The Help Scheme box will tell you when it’s time to retune. All you have to do is press OK.
Former Tomorrow’s World presenter Maggie Philbin talks about the standard option equipment offered by the Switchover Help Scheme:

Help Scheme customers can also choose to upgrade to a Smart Talk Freeview Box. On-screen information is spoken aloud, including channel names and programme information. Users can change the speed at which text is read out, as well as the colour and the size of the text on the programme guide. People who are registered blind or partially sighted can choose the Smart Talk box as their standard option.

Retuning
If you have Freeview, you will need to re-tune your equipment during or after the switchover for your region.
Most people who have Freeview equipment from the Help Scheme will see a message on their TV screen that will say “Please press ‘OK’ to re-tune”. If you see this message, then press ‘OK’ on your digital TV remote and your digital box will retune itself.
Some Help Scheme customers will need to re-tune manually at switchover. We will write to you before your switchover date with instructions on how to do this.
There are two stages to the digital TV switchover. Your letter will tell you when these two stages take place.
Even if you have already set up your digital equipment, you will still need to re-tune it at switchover.
Satellite and cable services are not affected by switchover, so no re-tuning is needed.

We know that setting up digital equipment can be confusing, so you may want to ask a friend, family member or carer for help.
You can also call our helpline number, which can be found on the equipment we supplied.
